504
505 RICHARD MORRISON: The only reason I could support stalling is to give the
506 school board time to rethink this project, which is under sized.
507
508 GERALD UJDAK: Mr. Morrison there are many other factors that we cannot seem to
509 fathom either, there are some serious questions. That part of South Bend School
510 Corporation district is lacking one to two schools and they are proposing to build a school
511 with an 80% capacity of the present Harrison School.
512
513 JOHN OXIAN: Regarding this situation we are compromising mainly because of
514 my talk with Pat Bauer regarding the fact that bonds have been issued and contractual
515 work has begun on the new school. I agree that this not the right solution to the problems
516 surrounding this area. I know that if we take a stand on this school we are going to have
517 problems before the City Council, if I am going to take a stand I would rather do it on
518 Nunner and Washington School.
519
520 MARY JANE CHASE: Is this going to be a practice by the school administration to
521 issue bonds early, thus, trapping people into agreeing with them in the future?
522
523 JOHN OXIAN: We have always had communications and a working partnership
524 with the School Corporation until recently when communications ceased with the new
525 administration. The only other building that the Commission would even consider for
526 landmark designation would be Marquette, all others have either been demolished or
527 designated. I would like to make a motion to withdraw Harrison School from the agenda.
528
529 GERALD UJDAK: I second the motion.
530
531 _ After due consideration, the following action was taken:
532
533 Upon a motion by John Oxian, being seconded by Gerald Ujdak and carried with
534 Martha Choitz against and Joann Sporleder abstaining, the motion to withdraw 3302 W.
535 Western, Harrison School, was approved.
536
537
538 2. 1534 W. Sample, Washington School
539
540 GERALD UJDAK: This is the only school ever built in South Bend at the request of
541 recent immigrants. They actually formed a committee, which spent two years to get
542 approval for this school. Prior to the erection of this school, the nearest school was
543 Oliver, which was full and over a mile away.
544
545 JOANN SPORLEDER: Weren't schools very nationalistic at that time?
546
547 GERALD UJDAK: Yes, both schools and churches were very nationalistic.
548
12
