SECTION 106 COMPLIANCE <br />The staff reviewed ninety-nine (99) environmental review inquiries from the Department of <br />Economic Development during this period. The HPC has maintained its Programmatic <br />Memorandum of Agreement with the SHPO and National Advisory Council to ensure <br />protection of cultural properties which are listed on or qualify for the National Register of <br />Historic Places. <br />SPECIAL PROJECTS <br />During this period the Historic Preservation Commission was awarded DHPA grant money to <br />complete the design and printing of the new County Re -Survey. The commission has hired <br />graphic designer, Paula Headley to create the new book and Commercial Graphics to print the <br />estimated 1,000 copies. The design process of the survey is complete and under review with <br />the estimated date for printing to commence the end of January 2001. <br />HPC researched the Kessler Place Proposed Local Historic District, creating a preservation <br />plan, complete with maps, histories, photos and district boundary options. <br />The Commission reviewed proposed alterations to the draft form of the guidelines for Taylor's <br />Field Local Historic District. The guideline books were designed, printed and mailed during <br />the early portion of 2000. <br />During this period HPC welcomed intern, Tisha Greenslade, a Notre Dame American Studies <br />student, this summer. Ms. Greenslade researched, designed and wrote a new, comprehensive, <br />introductory style pamphlet on the Studebaker Corporation and family in South Bend. The <br />pamphlet will be printed in time for the Studebaker National Conference which is to be held in <br />South Bend in the year 2001. <br />SUMMARY OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS <br />During this period the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County <br />has remained involved and engaged with a broad range of historic preservation issues and <br />concerns throughout St. Joseph County and in the city of South bend. The day -today <br />administration of Local Historic Districts and Local Historic Landmarks continues to be a <br />primary part of the HPC and staff's participation in the preservation of significant local cultural <br />resources. In addition, the HPC has worked toward the designation of additional structures and <br />neighborhoods and has responded to grass-roots requests from the community to be a part of the <br />ongoing dialogue of preservation in the area. <br />The HPC maintains its responsibilities as a Certified Local Government and continues its <br />interaction with local government agencies and officials in the long-term task of preservation <br />education and advocacy. The preservation cause had also been promoted in the larger____ - <br />community. <br />
