COWLES HOUSE 19701 COWLES <br />This is a Cross -Gabled house with Gothic features which was constructed in 1875 by Frederick <br />Rufus Cowles, a pioneer resident of St. Joseph County and craftsman. The house passed from <br />one generation of the Cowles family to another until it was inherited by Frederick Cowles' great <br />grandson, Wayne Plank. <br />SMITH FARM 51991 ASH ROAD <br />This house is an interesting example of the combination of the Cross Gable and Italianate styles <br />of architecture. It has the roof line and style of a Cross Gable with the window features of an <br />Italianate. It was built in 1875 by John G. Smith, a prominent area farmer who owned and <br />operated the family farm until his death in 1917. The property remained in the Smith family <br />until 1927 when it was sold to Lester Kline. <br />METZGER FARM 14309 ADAMS ROAD <br />This Greek Revival style house was built in 1847 by Mr. Metzger, it is the third oldest home in <br />Harris Township. Mr. Metzger was a native German clock maker and one of the first settlers of <br />Harris Township. He farmed the land most of his life eventually passing the land to his son-in- <br />law, Alexander Metzger. He operated the farm and ventured into the cattle business with his <br />dad. The property remained in the Metzger family until 1960. <br />NATIONAL REGISTER <br />In 2000 the HPC commissioned the preparation of nominations to the National Register of <br />Historic Places for two single site properties. <br />MUESSEL/DREWERY'S BREWERY COMPLEX. 1408 ELWOOD <br />This nomination was accepted by the Historic Preservation Commission and recommended to <br />the Mayor and State Review Board for placement on the National Register. The State Review <br />Board is in the process of reviewing the nomination with the hopes of completing a <br />recommendation with in the early part of 2001. <br />SOUTH BEND BREWERING ASSOCATION <br />This nomination was accepted by the Historic Preservation Commission and recommended to <br />the Mayor and State Review Board for placement on the National Register. The State Review <br />Board is in the process of reviewing the nomination with the hopes of completing a <br />recommendation with in the early part of 2001. <br />OTHER NATIONAL REGISTER ACTIVITIES <br />The HPC has received and reviewed two new National Register applications during this period <br />which originated outside the commission's own activities. They are, the Wertz-Bestle Farm, - - - <br />51387 Portage Road and Evergreen Hill, located at 59449 Keria Trail. <br />
