JOSEPH COUNTY
2001
NEIGHBORHOOD
HISTORY
Riverside Drive Local Historic District was design —
by ordinance in 1985. Riverside Drive is a relative—
intact example of an early Twentieth - Century middle -
class residential development. The area was located
northwest of the original town of South Bend and re-
mained undeveloped until the latter half of the Nine-
teenth-- Century. Development began when Horatio
Chapin's successors platted the Chapin Place Addition
in 1890 on land that had been the family estate.
The neighborhood grew quickly between 1902 and 1918
when eighty-one percent of the residences were built.
The oldest building (circa 1898) constructed in this dis-
trict is the Queen Ann style house located at 1007 Riv-
erside Drive. The rapid growth of the area can be attrib-
uted to three factors, one, the easy access to the streetcar
line, two, the scenic views of the St. Joseph River and
three, the creation of Leeper Park in 1895.
The early residents of this district represented a cross
section of the community including professionals, busi-
ness owners and skilled workers. Among them we
r
three mayors, W. Riley Hinkle, Jessie Pavey and II
George Schosk.
The district consists of Queen Anne, Prairie,
American Four - Square, Colonial Revival, Dutch
Colonial, Bungalow and Period Revival styles of
architecture.
