HISTORIC <br />STRUCTURES <br />909 RIVERSIDE DRIVE <br />This house was constructed in 1909, by famous local <br />architect, Ennis Austin, of the firm Austin & Sham - <br />bleau. This prominent partnership was responsible <br />for designing many of the residential as well as com- <br />mercial properties in South Bend. Mr. Austin utilized <br />many innovative as well as quirky design techniques <br />when creating this house. He resided here with his <br />studio located over the garage until 1913 when it was <br />sold to Carl Ross, president of Burnoil Engine Com- <br />pany. <br />DISTRICT MAP <br />RIVERSIDE HISTORIC DISTRICT <br />JULY. 1998 <br />975 RIVERSIDE DRIVE <br />This house was built in 1918 by Charles E. Baile— <br />salesman for the Cadillac Motor Sales Company — <br />and his wife, Louise Perkins, resided here for two <br />years, selling the property in 1920 to Eleanor Ste- <br />phenson. Ms. Stephenson married Edward Peacock, <br />a purchasing agent for the Stephenson Underwear <br />Mills, in 1921. <br />1007 RIVERSIDE DRIVE <br />This Tudor Revival style house was constructed in <br />1903 for George Cutter. Mr. Cutter was an electrical <br />specialist who owned and operated the George Cutter <br />t Company. This Company supplied all of the <br />==s for South Bend as well as for various towns <br />throughout the country. It was one of the nations <br />premier lighting corporations. Mr. Cutter lived at <br />this address until 1912 when it was sold to Dr. <br />Charles Vickery.. <br />944 RIVERSIDE DRIVE <br />This Dutch Colonial Revival style residents was de- <br />signed by local architect, W.W. Schneider and b <br />in 1903 by Charles P. Drummond. Mr. Drummo� <br />local attorney, owned the property until 1923 when <br />he sold it to William "Riley" Hinkle, owner of Hinkle <br />Motor Company. <br />962 RIVERSIDE DRIVE <br />Calvin Clauer commissioned architect, W.W. Schnei- <br />40 n 1913 to design and build a home for his family. <br />Clauer, a local jeweler, resided her a until his <br />death in 1914. Mrs. Clauer, who remarried in 1921 to <br />David Berglund, continued to live at this address until <br />1927. <br />This Queen Anne style house is the oldest house in <br />this district. It was built in 1898 and moved to its <br />present location in 1912 by owners, Edward and <br />Deborah Twomey. Mr. Twomey came to South <br />Bend in 1902 as the agency manager for the Equi= <br />ble Life Insurance Company. He lived in this house <br />until his death in 1917 at which time the house <br />passed to his wife. <br />916 RIVERSIDE DRIVE <br />
