Mr. Oxian moved to place the application into the Standards and Maintenance Committee. Mr.
Weiner seconded the motion Mrs. Sporleder stated that there would be no easy solution to the
water problem caused by a poorly placed addition over the front entry. Mr. Ujdak asked if the
house had any gutters. Mr. Bernth stated that house does not currently have gutters, however,
he was planning on adding them latter. He also noted that the badly damaged portions of the
clapboard would be repaired prior to siding being installed. Mr. Oxian stated that if the owner
was planning on repairing the wood siding then vinyl siding would not need to be installed. Mr.
Bernth interjected that nearly every board on the house is deteriorating in some form or another.
There was some discussion over the pros and cons of installing gutters and downspouts as a
solution to the water problem. Mrs. Sporleder noted that the problems are too serious to be
solved by gutters and that gutters may add to the deterioration instead of relieving it. Mr.
Talley stated that Mr. Bernth would need to contact the Staff with in the next week to set up a
Committee meeting. The motion passed with Mrs. Sporleder abstaining.
B. Mr. Etzler introduced himself as a
member of the group trying to purchase the Remedy Building. He further noted that he was in
attendance for two reasons, one, to represent the potential buyers and two, to become familiar
with how the Historic Preservation Commission operates. Mr. Oxian stated that since the
potential owner was present and not opposing the landmarking of the building that the issue be
tabled for one month to allow finalization of the sale. He further noted that an owner consent
form should be sent to Mr. Etzler on which he is to sign and state any known projects his group
is considering for the structure. Mr. Etzler stated that he appreciates the courtesy the
Commission is extending, however, he does not feel that he will be in a position to sign a
consent form with in the next thirty days. Mr. Lykowski, the current owner of the 501 W.
Colfax, stated that another purchase agreement has been signed between himself and Mr.
Etzler's group, to allow them more time to solidify their financing. Then there was some
discussion over the National Register status of the property and Mr. Duvall's involvement with
this building. Mr. Oxian stated that the proposed landmark at 501 W. Colfax, will be tabled
until January. Mrs. DeRose stated that the building is currently under interim protection and
that the Commission has made these extensions to accommodate all parties with the belief that
if there is a problem with the six month interim protection period expiring then the owner and
potential owners would sign a consent to extend this period. She asked if this would be a
problem for either parry. Mr. Lykowski stated that he would not have a problem signing such
an extension as did Mr. Etzler.
2. 1818 Lincolnway West—Alward House
Mr. Talley presented the staff report and circulated photographs.
