3. 1019 S. Michigan—Burke Building
Mr. Talley presented the staff report and circulated photographs. Mrs. Sporleder asked what
type of stone was on the building. Mr. Ujdak stated that it was Terra Cotta. Mrs. Sporleder
noted that the architectural description should stated that the details are Terra Cotta, not stone.
There was some discussion over the fact that a Chinese restaurant was once located in this
building. Mrs. Choitz moved to send the nomination to the Common Council with a favorable
recommendation. Mr. Ujdak seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
4. 802 N. Lafayette—YWCA
Mr. Oxian stated that several meetings were held to discuss the landmarking of this structure at
which time the Common Council asked that the proposal be tabled until the future of the
building can be sorted out. He further recommended that the proposed landmarking of the
YWCA be tabled for no more than four months. Mrs. Choitz asked why they wanted to table it.
Mr. Oxian stated that the YWCA needed more space then the building could offer and thus, has
approached Memorial Hospital as a potential buyer and contributor to their move. He further
noted that the Council is not against landmarking, however, they want to help the YWCA by
waiting until things become more solidified. There was some discussion over Memorial
Hospitals interest in the property. Mrs. Choitz stated that the issue should be tabled for only
two months, so that the topic does not drag on indefinitely. She further noted that the
Commission needs to be included in all discussions and meetings concerning the future of this
building. Mrs. Choitz moved to table the proposed landmarking of the YWCA for two months.
Mr. Ujdak seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
5. 115 S. Lafayette—Lafayette/Dean Building
Mr. Talley presented the staff report and circulated photographs. He also noted that the owners
were in favor of having their building landmarked. There was some discussion over the
unsatisfactory conditions and lack of owner responsibility concerning the interior conditions of
the building. Mrs. Choitz noted that the deterioration of the interior and lack of basic services
has caused a majority of the tenants to leave. There was further discussion over the problems
the Adult Probation Office has caused to the overall security of the building. Mr. Ujdak moved
to send the proposed landmark to the Common Council with a favorable recommendation. Mrs.
Sporleder seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
6.911 S. Michigan—State Bank
Mr. Talley presented the staff report and circulated photographs. He further noted that the
owners were in favor of the designation.
