3. 1999-0405 - 344 S. Sunnyside, landscape and exterior work
Mr. Talley presented the staff report and circulated photographs. He also noted that the owner,
Bob Miller, was present. Mr. Oxian asked if the Commission should vote on each item of the
application separately. Mrs. DeRose stated that if it is believed that there will be some
discussion over a portion of the application then the Commission should vote on each item
separately. Mrs. Choitz moved to approve part one and two of the application concerning
landscaping and roof replacement. Mr. Zmyslo seconded the motion. The motion passed
unanimously. Mr. Zmyslo suggested that the siding portion of the application, item number
three, be placed into the Standards and Maintenance Committee where a preferred course of
action can be decided upon once the original siding of the house has been investigated. Various
commission members explained to the owner what it means to have an application placed in a
committee. Mrs. Hostetler moved to place section three of the application, concerning siding,
into the Standards and Maintenance Committee. Mr. Zmyslo seconded the motion. The motion
passed unanimously. Mr. Talley presented the staff's recommendation for the proposed portico.
Mr. Miller submitted the architectural drawing of the portico to the Commission. Mr. Zmyslo
asked if the existing sidelights and transom would be affected. Mr. Miller stated that the
existing entrance details would remain. Mrs. Choitz moved to approve section four of the
application concerning the portico, per the architectural drawing that was submitted to the
Commission at this meeting. Mrs. Hostetler seconded the motion. The motion passed
unanimously.
4. 1999-0405-2 - 1077 Riverside Drive, backyard fence
Mr. Talley presented the staff report and circulated photographs. He also noted that the owners
could not be present. There was some discussion over a lilac bush that would have to be
removed and where the fence would meet the house. Mr. Oxian asked if the fence would run
along the property line parallel to Golden Avenue. Mr. Talley stated that the owners have had a
lot of trouble with trespassing and burglaries and were hoping that by enclosing the back yard
these difficulties would cease. There was some discussion over where the fence will meet the
garage. Mrs. Choitz moved to approve the application with the addition that the fence connect
to the garage at the rear of the structure and that the lilac bush, which lies in the path of the
fence be moved. Mrs. Hostetler seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
5. 1999-0409 - 739 Bronson, cable fence
Mr. Talley presented the staff report. He also noted that the owner was unable to attend. Mrs.
Hostetler asked what alterations to the application the staff would recommend to make the
application guideline friendly. Mr. Talley stated that he would like to see the proposed post
height lowered to at least three feet. Mr. Oxian asked if a three foot fence would be visible to a
driver. There was some discussion over the height issue. Mr. Oxian noted that before the
application is passed the commission would need to obtain the type and size of the proposed
poles and metal wire. Mr. Fine stated that the real question is whether or not the fence is
appropriate for the district, which it is not. Mr. Talley concurred with Mr. Fine in the statement
that the fence is not appropriate for the district. Mr. Fine stated that the Commission should
work with the owner to find a better alternative.
2
