Mr. Fine moved to send a favorable recommendation of 125 West Marion to the Common
Council. Mrs. Hostetler seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Mrs. DeRose asked if there were any legal questions. There was some discussion over altering
a statute.
Mrs. Sporleder asked if since the agenda was being modified if the hearing of visitors could be
moved up in the agenda so that the two students from Notre Dame would not have to stay
through the entire meeting.
The Commission agreed to suspend the agenda and announce the visitors, Grant Epstein and
Tony Goldy, two architecture students from Notre Dame. Mr. Epstein stated that he and his
colleague were working with the Historic Preservation Commission in entering the Historic
American Building Survey by using the WPA House as their entry. He went on to discuss the
house and some of the project. Mrs. Sporleder asked the students to explain the HABs project
and the competition they wish to enter. Mr. Epstein noted that the Charles E. Peterson Prize is
very prestigious and would place the project in the National Library of Congress. To enter they
will be doing extensive, detailed drawings and elevations of the WPA House. Mr. Oxian asked
if the students would include a drawing of the original basement of the house before the move.
Mr. Goldy stated that they have been working with the owner on producing such a drawing.
Mr. Talley noted that he feels the students have a good chance of either winning second or first
place in this contest which would carry a lot of prestige and national recognition. Mr. Talley
asked when the project needed to be completed. Mr. Epstein stated that the project had to be
submitted by May 31 st.
III. Regular Business
A. Approval of Minutes
1. December 21, 1998
Mr. Zmyslo noted a spelling error on the first page under Certificate of Appropriateness for 619
Riverside Drive, that the word shacks needs to be shakes. Mr. Talley noted that eventually the
minutes will have numbered pages and lines. Mrs. Hostetler moved to approve the minutes as
corrected. Mr. Fine seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
B. Treasurers Report
Mr. Weiner noted that a year end report would be submitted next month.
C. Correspondence
Mr. Talley reported that the State Historic Preservation office has notified the staff that the
Commission has won the 1999 grant for the printing of the County Survey. He also noted that
the State Review Board will be in South Bend April 28, 1999. The meeting will be held in the
County Council Chambers at 1:OOpm after tours and a luncheon.
3
