CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT <br />STANDARDS <br />II. Existing Structures <br />II.C.1. Required <br />Original windows and doors, including sash, lintels, sills„ shutters, decorative glass, pediments, <br />hoods and hardware shall be retained or when deteriorated beyond repair, replaced with units <br />and trim resembling the original. <br />II.C.2. Recommended <br />If steel casement windows have to be replaced or removed, windows of similar size and style <br />should be used. <br />II.C.3. Prohibited <br />Original windows, doors, and hardware shall not be discarded when they can be restored and <br />reused in place. New windows and door openings that would alter the scale and proportion of <br />the building shall not be introduced. Inappropriate new window or door features such as metal' <br />insulating glass combinations that require the removal of original windows and doors shall not <br />be installed. <br />II.D. L Required <br />Existing or original porches, stoops, patios and steps including handrails, balusters, columns, <br />brackets, tiles and roof decorations shall be retained or replaced by replicas of the same design <br />and materials when deteriorated beyond repair. <br />III.A.1. Required <br />Additions to existing buildings shall be related in height and proportion to the existing <br />structure. <br />III.A.2. Recommended <br />Contemporary designs should be compatible in character and mood to the building or <br />neighborhood. <br />III.A.3. Prohibited <br />Additions that would add new height or change the existing facade of a building and change its <br />scale and architectural character shall not be constructed. <br />III.A.4. Not Recommended <br />Any style or period of architecture that is incompatible with the existing should not be <br />permitted in new additions. <br />III.B 1. Required <br />Material used on an addition to an existing structure shall relate to the existing or original <br />materials of the structure. Also, as much of the original structure as possible shall be retained <br />so that the addition could be removed without damage to the basic structure and appearance of <br />the building. <br />
