Wayne Street <br />South Bend, IN. <br />OWNER — Jed & Paula Eide <br />DESIGNATION — LHD-EW <br />RATING — Contributing C/10 <br />,STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />Developers, )Whitcomb & Keller, built this H.R. Stapp designed Tudor Revival house in 19.25. <br />for the architect. Mr. Stapp was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1890 and moved to South Bend <br />in 1917. Mr. Stapp was an architect and resident designer of the Whitcomb & Keller <br />development company. He was responsible for designing many of the buildings in the <br />Sunnymede development, now known as the East Wayne Street Historic District. Mr. Stapp <br />and his wife, Eva Laurian-Stapp, resided at this address until 1931 when they sold it to Herbert <br />L. & May E. Cramer. Mr. Cramer was a general agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life <br />Insurance Company. The Cramers lived here until 1961 when they sold it to Dr. James E. & <br />Alice Farrier. They resided here until 1965 when the house was sold to Jerome F. & May - <br />Shandy Jr., a representative of Associates Investment Corporation. The lived at this address <br />until 1971 when it was sold to David & Mary Sparks, who resided here until 1985 when they <br />sold it to the current owners, Jed & Paula Eide. <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />Applicant is proposing to construct a small, 6'x15', one story addition on the west side of the <br />house that would not exceed the existing lines of the house. The addition will employ materials <br />which currently exist on the house and would not disrupt the original design of the house. The <br />applicant also proposes to reconstruct a severely damaged back porch, approximately four feet <br />from its original location, on the same rear wall of the house. By moving the door and porch <br />the applicant is proposing to take out an existing window, cut a new door opening and add a <br />new, four paneled window in place of the original door opening. <br />STANDARDS <br />The Preservation Guidelines for East Wayne Street Historic District state: <br />b) ....The Guidelines for the East Wayne Street District follow the Rehabilitation Model.... <br />
