MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING <br />of the <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />Monthly Meeting <br />7:30 p.m. <br />Monday October 19, 1998 <br />County Commissioner's <br />Conference Room <br />7th Floor County -City Building <br />I. Call to Order <br />John Oxian, president of the commission, brought the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. <br />II. Roll Call <br />Commission members present were: John Oxian, Joann Sporleder, Catherine Hostetler, Adrian <br />Fine, Ron Zmyslo and Janeanne Petrass. Commission staff present was: Ed Talley, acting <br />director, Rhonda Saunders, administrative assistant, and Aladean DeRose, consul, arrived at <br />8:00. <br />Also attending the meeting were: Don Sporleder, David Betson and Noreen Howard. <br />Mr. Oxian table the Certificate of Appropriateness for 1323 E. Wayne Street, at the request of <br />the owner and the National Register Nomination, 3016 Portage Avenue, at the request of its <br />board. <br />III. Public Hearing <br />A. Certificate of Appropriateness Applications <br />1. 1998-1001 - 944, Riverside Drive, new chain link fence in rear yard. <br />Mr. Talley presented the staff report and circulated photographs. He also noted that the owner, <br />Mr. Betson, was present. Mrs. Hostetler moved to approve the application as recommended by <br />staff. Mrs. Petrass seconded the motion. Mr. Oxian asked the owner, Mr. Betson, why he was <br />removing the existing portions of fencing. Mr. Betson stated that the existing sections consisted <br />of rotting wood posts with chain link attached to the posts. Mr. Talley stated that since Mr. <br />Betson purchased the property he has worked on restoring elements of the house.. The motion <br />passed unanimously. <br />2. 1998-1001-2 pt.B - 1012 Riverside Drive, addition of wood shutters and window boxes. <br />Mr. Talley presented the staff report and circulated photographs. He also noted that the owners, <br />Mr. & Mrs. Howard, were present. Mr. Oxian asked if the owner wanted to install wood <br />window boxes. Mrs. Howard stated that she has decided to use a wrought iron style window <br />box instead to better keep with the houses Mediterranean feel. She presented the Commission <br />with photographs and drawings exhibiting the house with such shutters and window boxes. Mr. <br />Oxian asked if the shutters would be operable. Mrs. Howard stated that they would be fixed <br />shutters. Mr. Fine asked if the shutters would be made of wood. <br />1 <br />
