There also were numerous business people residing here including: Henry
Gaskill, owner of a Tobacco Shop; Samuel Bowman, County Commissioner 1882• -to
1891; Jacob Chillas, dry goods merchant, board of Education member and married
to Lydia Studebaker Chillas; John J.' Gehring, Chairman of the Board of the
Wyman Company'department store. The area was also home to numerous members of
the Stephenson family, whose family was prominent -in various South Bend
manufacturing firms.
Overall; as with any local historic neighborhood, it is the neighborhood's
"portrayal" of the era that is most relevant in determining its significance.
For "Taylor Field," it is its consistency over time as an upper middle-class
residential area and its retention of the original material culture and
character of the place that make it a good -example for understanding local
historical and cultural development.
Conclusion #3
As noted above, the area presently is made up of 51 major buildings with
ancillary structures. The most recently published (1993) Indiana Sites and
Structures .Inventory identified 37 contributing structures within these
proposed boundaries, approximately 72.5 % of the .total. Eleven (11)
structures, approximately 10% of -all major buildings, were rated as
individually "significant" (S-11 or 12). Significant buildings are considered
eligible for individual designation as Local Landmarks.
As a.whole the area retains sufficient numbers of contributing structures in
close enough proximity, to warrant designation. In addition, all of the
structures now considered as noncontributing are from the period of original
development and could be restored to their original state with minimal
rehabilitation, if the owners so desired.
The HPC Staff believes the neighborhood is worthy of preservation both as a
historic entity and as a viable residential area that is in need of, such help
if it is to survive into the future.
David B. Duvall, Director
6/9/98
NOTES
1. Municipal Code of the Citv of South Bend Chapter 21, Sec. 21-117.2(d) :597
2.
