original lights looked light and the - whereabouts of one- of the original <br />lights,. <br />Mrs. Fife reported that recommendations nine and ten were-the rehabilitation <br />and introduction parking spaces. <br />Mrs. Fife stated that the twelfth recommendation was the relocation of the <br />play apparatus to the corner of Riverside Drive and 'N. Lafayette Street. <br />.Diane-Corbett expressed concern over moving the playground to such a busy and- <br />uns area .__Mr _Salmon — stated — that —a— green — chain link - - fend has bee -,i <br />proposed -to enclose the play area for the safety of the children and that the <br />,children would use the same crosswalks they are using now- A discussion was <br />held regarding the esthetics of placing' a fence on the proposed corner. Mrs. <br />C'brbett interjected that the proposed area was too small. Mr. Salmon stated <br />that it could be 'expanded all the way to the tennis courts. Mrs. Corbett - <br />stated that the area being proposed is an excellent place to watch tennis <br />matches and the noise from the new play area may cause distractions for the <br />various tennis tournaments held there. There was a dialogue and discussion <br />between Mrs. Corbett and Mr. Salmon concerning the safety of the existing <br />playground and the proposed playground. Mrs. Fife interjected that the main <br />concern in the move was the erosion being caused at its current location and <br />how it disrupts the esthetics of the central portion of the park. She further <br />'stated that she truly appreciates such comments and then she tried again to <br />explain the reasons behind the move, such as the deterioration. There was <br />some more bantering over the proposed move of the playground and'the chain <br />,link.,, fence. Mr's. Choitz stated that she would not- vote in favor of the <br />proposed location for the playground. Mrs. Fife" stressed that this plan was <br />"only a preliminary report and that. the, ultimate decisions would rest with the <br />Commission and residents: She then opened the floor to further questions' <br />concerning'all of'the recommendations and asked the Commission -what the next <br />steps would be. <br />Mr. Sporleder, expressed the desire-for the restoration of the riverside .trail <br />and a need for a path connecting both sides of the park. <br />Mr. Salmon asked what direction the Westerly Group should be headed in as far <br />as the completion of the final document. He further asked if the playground <br />should be-left off the final document. Mr. Oxian stated that the playground'.' <br />recommendation should be included regardless of its controversial nature.. Mr. <br />Talley interjected that he" believed the playground was in the wrong spot' <br />currently and does need to be addressed. He further noted that since baseball <br />was prohibited at its location in Leeper Park, that -the baseball diamond might <br />be a better location for the -play ground. There was some discussion over the' <br />erosion at the play grounds current location.. Mr. Oxian stated that the <br />_Commission has its own minimum maintenance standards that can be put forth to <br />correct the erosion problem. There was some discussion over what the- Parks <br />Department - is going to say about the preservation plan. <br />Mr. Talley expressed his satisfaction with the proposed plan and 'that he. <br />believes that all 14. points mentioned are good recommendations. Mr. Duvall <br />stated, that some level of prioritization is needed for the plan, but, it <br />should kept simple. <br />7 <br />
