South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - December 20, 1996
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
g. continued....
would accommodate two doctors, four nurse
practitioners, and have the ability to serve
more of the underserved individuals in the
community.
He stated that they wanted to stay in this
particular medically underserved area for
financial incentatives in doing so, and these
areas are in high need of this service.
He stated that thirteen or so census tracts
have been defined by the government as
medically underserved for the last twenty
years in St. Joseph County. The expectation
is that the population will grow in these
projected areas over time, resulting from
children without insurance affected by the
Welfare Reform and employers who don't
offer their employees medical insurance.
There will be families who aren't self
sufficient, who will need access to medical
care. This facility will provide an expansion
of that medical care to those families.
Carl Ellison stated that this location is located
near the Family & Children's Center. It is
also on the bus line and would lead to some
connection to the customers they seek by
virtue of its proximity to both the Boys and
Girls Club, the houses of South Bend
Heritage Foundation and other new
developments.
He stated that Memorial has spent a
considerable amount of time talking with all
parties involved in this proposed project.
H:\ HOME\ CPHIPPS \WPDATA \COMMSN\122096.MIN -13-
