3) Prohibited
Front porches and steps that are important to the
building's style and development may not be altered
or removed.
4) Not Recommended
Original porch details should not be replaced with
materials representing a different period or style
-- - - - -- - -- -- - - --
RECOMMENDATIONS
The existing porch in fair condition, with some noticeable
structural problems. Of all elements, the columns are in the
best condition. They consist of 3/4 length tapered wood tuscan
order columns resting on paneled wood piers. Sections of the
original balustrade still remain on the west side of the porch,
although considerably warped. Along the eastern side of porch,
the balustrade sections are missing. The balustrade consists of
simple wood spindles, square in cross section, with a molded
wooden rail.
The owner questions whether another column existed, one perhaps
flanking the other side of the entry steps. The staff believes,
from examples elsewhere in the city, that another column did not
exist, and that a paneled wood pier anchored the balustrade in
the location.
The staff gives a favorable recommendation to this restoration
proposal as it is in keeping with the pertinent standards and is
-- a positive step -- towards the - restoration of the building. --
J. Pastor -
HPC Staff
P
Jr
