Washington <br />Commission members, the director, and the administrative <br />assistant participated in various conferences throughout the year <br />to keep abreast of current preservation legislation, policies and <br />techniques in order to better serve South Bend and St. Joseph <br />County. They included: <br />-A regional preservation conference in Illinois attended by Ms. <br />Kiemnec. <br />-A workshop held by Apple Computer in Chicago, Illinois - Ms. <br />Straw. <br />-A preservation workshop in Madison, Indiana set up and attended <br />by Ms. Kiemnec. <br />-A preservation workshop in Fort Wayne, Indiana set up by Ms. <br />• Kiemnec and attended by Ms. Kiemnec, Ms. Straw, Mrs. Sporieder, <br />Mrs. Choitz, Mr. Newburn, and Mrs. Eugenia Schwartz, assistant <br />city attorney. <br />-The third annual Mayor's Conference on Historic Preservation <br />attended by Ms. Kiemnec, Ms. Straw, Mr. Nimtz, Mrs. Choitz, Mrs. <br />Sporieder, and Mrs. Petrass. <br />VIII. SPECIAL PROJECTS <br />In March of 1985, the Darden Bridge was listed on the National <br />Register of Historic Places as a result of an application done by <br />the HPC staff. The Commission applied for and was awarded a <br />grant to partially fund an engineering study (balance of funding <br />was provided by the County) to determine restoration needs for <br />the bridge and costs. <br />The Studebaker Clubhouse and Trees were listed on the National <br />Register in September of 1985 as a result of an application done <br />by the HPC staff. <br />Landmark Standards for South Bend and the County were updated. <br />A Certificate of Appropriateness Notice similar to a Building <br />Permit was devised to be posted on historic buildings while <br />additions or alterations are taking place in order to notify area <br />residents. <br />The Commission worked with the Code Enforcement Department and <br />the City Attorney's office to set up procedures to incorporate <br />violaters of the landmark and district standards into the Code <br />Enforcement Hearing process. <br />
