Mr.
Oxian said he would not object to postponing a decision on the build-
in4f it was going to be included as part of the West Washington local
historic district. Ms. Sporleder suggested that this be tabled until
the status is clarified. Permission of the owner to have this build-
ing declared a landmark has already been received.
Ms. Peck asked about the history of the building. She mentioned that
a portfolio of every landmark should be made, including each one's
educational, historical, and architectural value, along with photos
and a survey card. Mr. Wasielewski said that in the past, a copy of
the survey card was circulated among Commission members, and agreed
we should revive this process.
Mr. Oxian then brought up the house on 405 West Wayne. He said the
owner was going to send the paper in giving permission to declare the
house a landmark, but she passed away. He feels that the only way
to guarantee that the house will not be destroyed is to declare it a
landmark. Mr. Oxian received a verbal yes but no written permission.
He has tried to get in touch with the daughter regarding this house.
He said this-is.one situation where the Commission doesn't have time
to ask the owners as the building is for sale. Mr. Oxian then made
a motion to have it declared a landmark. It was suggested that the
solid brick building would probably cost $30,000 to move. Since the
motion was not seconded, it was suggested that Mr. Oxian try again,to
contact the current owner.
• Legal
There was not a rgoart from this committee. Mr. Oxian. asked Mr. Nimtz
if he had talked to Gaylen Allsop concerning the certification of
statutes. Mr. Nimtz replied that he had not talked to him.
Public Relations and Community Education
Ms. Candy Peck reported that she is in the process of writing an
interim report to Richard Haupt, the Director of Education Services
at the National Trust concerning our grant from them. She said the
Commission has already received $2,400, one half of the grant funds.
She said she has bids for part of the packet. The architectural
drawings are ready for printing and the text that goes with the
drawings will be done soon, The game board should be done by the mid-
dle of next month. She said April 22, a Saturday, was chosen for a
workshop for teachers of civics, government, history, and art in the
middle and high schools. A letter and registration form for the work-
shop will be sent out to them.
Mrs. Price then wished to present some material to the Commission which
involved taking advantage of a fund from the Cornelius O'Brien Founda-
tion and administered by Indiana University which is available to bring
in speakers. She had in mind bringing Carl Westmoreland here to speak
before a public assembly and maybe to the neighborhood associations for
Historic Preservation Week. He is from Cincinnati where he has done a
great deal on neighborhood preservation. She received a committment
from this Foundation to bring a speaker in, all expenses will be paid,
plus a $500,00 honorarium. Mr. Nimtz was highly in favor of this,
