January 16, 1978 <br />Page 10 <br />seonded this motion. There was further discussion on this issue. The <br />motion to table both the motion and the amendment was voted on and <br />passed unanimously. <br />Mrs. Sporleder suggested that a letter be sent to Southhold informing <br />them of the Commission's action in this matter. <br />Miss Peck informed the Commission that the landmark designation for <br />the Leeper Bridge and the Darden Road Bridge are slated for first read- <br />ing, and she further stated that funds for rehab for these bridges is <br />available from the Federal Register if the bridges are nominated for <br />the National Register of Historic Places. <br />The Podell house at 1608 Devon Circle will have second reading either <br />the 23rd of January or the 13th of February. <br />Mr. Eckerle was clarified as to why the Leeper Bridge was introduced <br />at the County Council. Mr. 0xian informed him that it comes under the <br />jurisdiction of the County Engineer since it is on the State Highway. <br />Mr. Nimtz informed the Commission that a former classmate of his, Helen <br />Miller, delivered a most striking night photograph of the Leeper Bridge <br />with its original lights to him. The lights were manufactured by the <br />George Cutter Works. <br />Legal Committee <br />There was no report from this committee. <br />Public Relations and Community Education <br />Miss Peck said the topic of the grant would be discussed at the <br />next meeting. <br />Standards and Historic Plan <br />There was no report from this committee. <br />Presidential Report <br />Mr. 0xian reported that he felt the Commission should start certifi- <br />cation procedures of the city ordinance so that it -could qualify <br />under the Tax Reform Act of 1976 if there would be a historic district. <br />The historic district would then be entitled to tax benefits if the <br />certification of the ordinance is so approved. Mr. Nimtz felt this <br />subject sho.-ld be referred to an appropriate committee, and it was <br />decided to refer this to the Legal Committee. <br />Staff Report <br />Miss Peck reported on a letter received from TenEch Environmental <br />Consultants. They are currently working with St. Joseph County in <br />the preparation of an environmental impact statement for the Ironwood - <br />Corridor in the metropolitan South Bend - Mishawaka area. Miss Peck <br />replied that the only complaint is the 124 trees that must be removed <br />between Jefferson and McKinley, between Northside and Mishawaka Avenue, <br />and between Corby and Edison Road. It was suggested that an alternative <br />be sought that would decrease the amount of effect on the natural <br />
