January 16, 1978
Page 9
cussion about perhaps having a historical overlay in certain areas and
changing the zoning and occupancy in that area. The Area Plan Commission
is doing something called an Office Professional District, Mr Allsop
suggested that the Commission folllow along in the existing channels for
such zoning changes that you normally have to do through the Area Plan
then by ordinnee and make a strong inp t as to what is wanted both in
writing and orally, especially from the residents of the West Washington
area. The he suggested that the Historic Preservation Commission may
consider setting up a local historic district within that area which
would affect external structures and keep them historically significant;
He further said Tippecanoe worries a lot of people and all sorts of sug-
gestions for it have peen made. He said each avenue should be explored
thoroughly. He again stressed that zoning is being worked on, and it is
important to work with the Area Plan Commission on any changes that meeded
to be done.,
Mrs. Price asked about a time table for this zoning and was informed
that it would be done by the end of the year.
Mrs. Sporleder asked if Mr. Allsop would be willing to work along with
this project and was told that Mr. Allsop would be pleased to work on it.
Mr. Wasielewski wondered if the investigation of this work was under the
jurisdidtion of the Historic Districts and was informed that it was.
Historic Landmarks
Mr. Oxian made a motion that the Historic Preservation Commission declare
Tippecanoe Place a historic landmark with the standards being left open
to the Southhold Restoration to decide in a forthcoming letter. Mr. Al
Stivers seconded this motion. Mr. Oxian read the letter from the Board
of Southhold Restorations requesting this designation. Mr. Nimtz also
supported this motion. Mrs. Price wished to amend the motion that the
landmarks status be granted with "A" standards. Mr. Oxian stressed
that the type of standards were always left to the owners to adopt.
Mrs. Price moved that the Commission amend the motion that it be re-
stricted to "A". Mr Stivers sedonded this motion. Mrs. Price then
stated her reasons for the restriction. She felt the building should
be protected in every way possible and should be guarded by "A" standards.
There was discussion cin thiel issue.
Mr. Jack Smith, as president of Southhold, then addressed the Commission
and told that he was not authorized to indicate the standards for Tippe=
canoe. He said a public meeting is scheduled for Feburary 2nd where
this problem will be discussed. He felt the citizens and members of the
Board should make the decision of the standards.
Mr. Wasielewski suggested that the motion might be put off until the
February meeting, until Southhold has had its meeting with the Board
of Directors and with the public. He said he would definitely like to
see "A" standards on Tippecanoe but the decision must be theirs. Mrs.
Price again stated that standard designation could have a bearing on
future owners and the taxation of the building,
to
Mr. Nimtz then moved that the amendment, the motion and the amendment
thereto be ladi on the table until the February meeting, Mr, Rothermel
