February 21, 1977
Page 3
Historic Landmarks
Mr. Oxian made a motion that a residence at 63012 Beech Road be
declared an historic landmark. He said it was a fine example of
Queen Anne style and was the site of the Klondike Telephone Ex-
change at one time and has quite a bit of history connected with
it. He remarked, that it was the recommendation of the Landmarks
Committee that this home be so designated. Mr. Stivers seconded.
this motion. Ms. Davisson asked if the owners have agreed, in
letter, to such declaration and Mr. Oxian affirmed this. The
motion passed without further discussion.
Mr. Oxian then mentioned a home at 51256 U.S. 31 North. It is
an excellent example of Federal style, and in speaking with the
owner, Mr.Oxian remarked that the owner, a Mrs. Rumpf, is not
sure if she wants the home declared a landmark. The main reason -
for the hesitancy is that she might sell the property for commer-
cial purposes. Mr. Oxian said the property next to it is zoned
commercial but he is not too sure about the zoning on her parti-
cular property. There was some discussion on this matter. Mr.
Oxian asked Commission's suggestions on what course of action to
take. Ms. Davisson said she would look into it and perhaps come
up with a suggestion at the next meeting.
Public Relations and Education
Ms. Davisson informed the Commission that the next segment on
WNIT (Channel 34) on historic preservation will be on March 3rd,
at 3:30 p.m. on the "Patchwork" show. The topic will concern
itself with the Federal style of architecture and It. Sporleder
will give the presentation.
Ms. Davisson next mentioned that she had recently given a pre-
sentation to the local Questors Club about various houses in the
area. She said the presentation was very well received and the
audience was especially interested in a brochure compiled by Rita
Kopczynski and Marsha Mullin, entitled "How to Discover Your
Home's History." Ms. Davisson suggested that there is a need in
the area for such a brochure, that perhaps it could be amplified
and published, using some of the $5,000 grant money for the pro-
ject. It was mentioned that it was the first of its kind in the
area. It was originally distributed at a meeting of the Near
Northwest Property Owner's Association. Ms. Kopczynski said.it
could be amplified and perhaps illustrations added. Ms. Davisson
also remarked that realtors were very interested in this item.
Standards and Historic Plan
There was no report from this committee.
