January 6, 1976
Page 3
Historic Landmarks
Mr. Oxian reported that this committee had not met since the
last meeting. He discussed the homes that were passed as
landmarks; one in the city and two in the county. He stated --
that he and Mr. Catanzarite discussed an amendment to the or-
dinance relative to one of the county houses. He further
stressed that there should be mutual understanding between the
_ _property _owner and -the -Commiss ion regarding -the -standards --set-
up for these homes. He said a letter should be sent to the
Commission from the property owner in regard to this mutual
understanding and this should be presented before the council.
Mr. Oxian mentioned that Mr. Kidder wants a meeting with him
regarding his house. Mr. Rinderle proposed that the Landmarks
Committee use a folder for each landmark under consideration and
presented a nomination form and a list of procedures, and a
paper to owners listing advantages and responsibilities in having
their home declared a landmark. He said this might prevent any
confusion on,the part of owners. Mr. Oxian then said that the
set of standards adopted by.the Commission would apply to the.
landmarks designated. He said that Mr. Rensberger, Mr.- Bauman,
and Mr. Kidder will received a set of these standards. He in-
formed the Commission that the Ordinance for the North Shore
property would be signed by Mr. Parent.
Bicentennial Committee Report
At this point, President Smith asked permission from the Com-
mission to deviate from the agenda in order to introduce Ms.
Gwen Stiver who is Ch6liinan of the South Bend Bicentennial
Committee. Ms. Stiver.stated that the Committee had been active
since November, 1972 planning events for this year. She dis-
cussed the many activities and events that would take place'in
South Bend, and she voiced hope that the Historic Preservation
Commission and the Committee could work together on some of
these projects. She mentioned a re-enactment of_LaSalle's
voyage, in December, and Mr. Smith indicated that perhaps the
Commission would get involved in this event. Ms. Stiver re-
marked that the Committee was in the process of establishing a
calendar of events. Ms. Davisson mentioned that Crumlish/Sporleder
had a map of old trials in the county and this, in addition to
the County Survey of Historical Houses, might be co-ordinated
with the efforts of the Bicentennial Committee. Ms. Stiver then
thanked the Commission for allowing her to talk on the subject
of the Bicentennial and akked to be put on the mailing list.
Legal
President -Smith suggested that Mr. F. Jay Nimtz be appraised of
the Jack Dunfee correspondence when he arrives.
Public Relations and Education
Ms. Davisson bought the Commission up:.to-date on-the.Humanities
meetings on zoning.held at Notre Dame.
