New Business <br />a. Expiration of terms of appointment <br />Mr. Smith reported that his term and the term of <br />Ms..Davisson would -expire within the next month. <br />Mr. Smith delegated the secretary to write letters <br />to the Mayor and to the County Commissioners in -- <br />forming them.of the necessity to,either re -appoint <br />the present Commission members or appoint successors. <br />b. Neighborhood histories <br />Ms. Davisson discussed a.history of the Chapin Park <br />neighborhood that she has-been working on and sug- <br />gested that Ms. Schlereth might work on this in her <br />spare time, for possible presentation as a pamphlet <br />issued by the Commission. <br />c. Ethnic Histories Project <br />Ms. Schlereth reported that the Urban Institute at <br />the University of Notre Dame had received funding <br />from the Lilly Foundation to collect::�_-r, oral history, <br />material from representatives of the ethnic groups <br />in South Bend. They have requested the Historic <br />Preservation Commission's support of such a program <br />with the intention of utilizing the Commission's <br />research consultant in training personnel to gather <br />the material and edit transcripts of the interviews. <br />A discussion followed, with Mr. Rothermel stating <br />that the consultant's services, while funded by the <br />Lilly grant, should not involve released time from <br />the work of the Commission. Mr: Oxian moved that <br />the Commission co-sponsor the program of gathering <br />oral history information from members of South Bend's <br />ethnic communities. Mr. Nimtz seconded the motion <br />and it passed unanimously. <br />d. Powell House <br />A discussion of the status of saving the Powell <br />house ensued. After some debate, Mr. Nimtz moved <br />that a letter be sent to the steering.committee of <br />the Powell house fund raising organization stating <br />that if they can present the Commission with a <br />history of the house and its importance to the <br />Black community, the Commission will consider <br />
