-2 -
such sites and structures would proceed under the super-
vision of qualified architects on the faculty of the University
of Notre Dnme, aided by their senior students. While the
actual survey was being accomplished, professionals in the
fields of history, sociology, archaeology, economics, en-
vironics, government, American studies and urban planning
would conduct research seminars to explore the background and
present-day conditions that form the context into which the
buildings and sites must be placed. South Bend and St. Joseph
County would be the information depository for research into
the growth and development of an urban area, and a laboratory
to test creative plans for "re -use" of one's history. The
faculty and :students would be challenged to apply the tech-
niques/theories of their academic disciplines towards re-
creating a past environment, and understanding its place in
the present and future.
The program will be designed to begin during the next
summer session in two complementary phases: a) an architectural
"windshield" survey of all existing structures and sites in
the county, and recording of inventory data; b) preliminary
research by social science faculty to acquaint themselves with
background material of conditions in South Bend and St. Joseph
County, and determine areas for intensive research exploration.
After the introductory research is completed by both the archi-
tects and the social scientists, they will meet in working
sessions to collate their respective data. The architects will
by this time have established potential districts and sites
worthy of detailed study based on their architectural merits.
