South Bend Redevelopment Commission
'regular Meeting - February 4, 1994
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
c. continued...
future expansion of the business office or
perhaps for living quarters.
This house is well maintained. It's unique. If
you drive north on South Michigan Street you
can't miss the Polack Agency home. There's
a beautiful garden there. I've known Frank
for some 15 years and Frank, it's one of his
joys in life to maintain that garden. There's
an American flag and a Polish flag that are
proudly displayed on that building. There's a
beautiful sign on that building. That house is
unique. The interior of that house is unique.
You could not replicate that house today at
any reasonable cost. And yet you are being
ci6wi asked today to take that house and bulldoze
it.
The question I have is why does the
Redevelopment staff insist on targeting a
growing, thriving business and take it for this
plan? You don't need that house for the
Sample -Ewing Development Plan. There are
other businesses on South Michigan Street
that have been excluded from the Plan. Even
with this talk of IVY Tech and the juvenile
facility, there are other properties along
South Michigan Street that have been
excluded. You don't need to take their house
to develop that Plan. And that house does
certainly not qualify as being blighted.
We're here today to ask you that when you
consider this proposed Resolution No. 1207,
to exclude Mr. and Mrs. Polack's property at
1010 S. Michigan Street from the acquisition
-26-
