South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - May 21, 1993
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
being mandated by the state. When the state
mandates a program, it's got to go
somewhere. So this group has been basically
involved in that kind of pressure; therefore I
strongly and adamantly oppose what has
happened —the kind of pressure you have put
on the School Board to make a decision
which is not in the best interest of "the whole
south side."
MS. AUBURN: Is there anyone else that
would like to speak?
MR. HUNT: For the record, Paula, I would
like to make clear that I think we were left
with the impression that the department is
going to be acquiring houses for the Riley
High School expansion. That is not true.
That is not part of the plan. Obviously the
School Corporation is doing that. We've
provided some technical assistance, but I want
to make clear that we are not putting
properties around Riley High School on our
acquisition list ( #1) so that's not part of our
plan and our action...
MS. OVERMEYER: I realize you are not,
but in the process, you are requiring the
School Corporation to spend millions of
dollars of educational monies to buy
properties. That, to me, is wrong also.
MR. HUNT: The second thing is that, quite
frankly, this not a hearing on Riley High
School. Obviously, opponents to the location
have taken advantage, as they should in a
-42-
