South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - May 21, 1993
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
inadequate athletic facilities; there will be
inadequate site for parking; and in order to
provide a truly first class high school for the
south side of South Bend, we'll just have to
continue eating up that neighborhood. On top
of that, what then happens to the elementary
school which is a neighborhood elementary
school, and just at the beginning of this week
a very tragic thing happened —a child was
killed crossing in front of a bus. Are we
going to then make those kids, because we
have to close their elementary because there
are not enough kids in that school? Are we
then going to put those kids on a bus and
possibly put their lives in danger? That was a
true accident. There was no malintent there.
But accidents do happen. And even in the
process of doing this, a major thoroughfare is
going to be required to be closed. Now the
City Council has not passed on that, but in
the present plan before the School Board,
they are asking to close Calvert Street. What
impact does that have on this whole area?
Where do those cars go when Calvert is
closed? Up and around the elementary
school. I definitely feel that this plan is a
negative system on the south side of town. I
do not think that they have taken into
consideration when they put pressure on the
School Board to make that decision. They
did not take into consideration the true impact
in that immediate neighborhood, on that
neighborhood elementary school, and on that
whole educational system on the south side of
town. There will be no room there to expand
for vocational kinds of programs which are
-41-
