South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - May 21, 1993
6. ' NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
MR. MORRISON: I'm Dick Morrison from
Hawkins Court on the southeast side. Is there
a precedent for tying closely into your
redevelopment effort, the key delivery
educational system of the community. Key
institutions. Your plan, as I read it, thinks
that the educational delivery system in that
area is critical to the efforts that you are
going to put forth there. I'm just wondering
if there is a precedent where the educational
system has assisted in stabilizing and
revitalizing blighted or whatever we're going
to call the area.
MRS. KOLATA: I don't believe that we
have had such a thing tied to our other areas
at this point. One of the aspects of the plan
is talking about making land available for a
new campus for Indiana Vocational and
Technical College. The closest analogy I
have to that is that we see a need to do
something, revitalizing that area and for new
development to be there, it seems to be a
good combination —we have land available
that needs to be redeveloped and they have a
need for a campus in a good central location
in a visible location. It seems to be a good
compliment that a semi -public or public
institution invest and help support our
activities in that area. In that respect we've
probably done something similar to that over
the years. But it wasn't necessarily an
educational institution.
MR. HUNT: I think it's important that we
continue to remember that we are going out
-32-
