South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - May 21, 1993
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
asking for private investors to come into the
central city and inner city to make
investments all the time when we're trying to
sell those areas. I think it would be
detrimental to that marketing effort, in terms
of trying to attract private investment, to have
public investment flee the inner city— whether
it's the IVY Tech campus or Riley, in
whatever form, at that location. So we think
it's critical that the public institutions step
forward along with the private sector and say,
"We're making an investment in the inner
city." And that's the only connection in
terms of the educational aspect.
MR. MORRISON: I guess my point is
whether that's a theory that's developed here
locally: we don't have a precedent somewhere
else?
MRS. KOLATA: I think there probably is a
precedent in another part of the country. I
just am not familiar with. And certainly
having public agencies invest in
redevelopment areas, I can just tell you,
without knowing specific examples, I am sure
that has happened in numerous places.
MR. HUNT: Most of them have been higher
education— University of Marquette,
Milwaukee. I think you find major public
hospitals will end up being part of a
redevelopment plan in a city. But not locally,
no. This is a first.
-33-
