Barbara Steele <br />of gouthhold Restorations said that she <br />could secure the $3,500 through various <br />sources to cover the cost of the <br />fea ibility study if she could secure <br />from the City a written indication that <br />it is willing "to consider adaptive use <br />(of the Southern Hotel Building) as an <br />alternative to demolition." We have <br />learned that "City" in this case means <br />Redevelopment Commission. Hence our <br />reqiest to make a presentation to you. <br />In the next few minutes I would like Fred <br />HoI cross of the Historic Preservation <br />Commission and Don Olson of The Troyer <br />Gro p to raise issues they feel are <br />pertinent. After which we will be glad <br />to answer any questions you might have. <br />Mr. Fred Holycross, Director, Historic <br />Pre ervation Commission, read the <br />fol owing statement: <br />The Historic Preservation Commission has <br />always maintained that the Southern Hotel <br />was a significant structure - - -it has been <br />rated as "Significant (5 -11)" on the <br />Indiana Historic Sites and Structures <br />Inv ntory. For this reason, the HPC has <br />ask d the Common Council to declare it a <br />Loc 1 Historic Landmark (bill tabled as <br />of ecember 1991). <br />The <br />his <br />His <br />structure's significance is both <br />:orical and architectural. <br />:orically it represents one of South <br />I's most important industrial <br />Terns -- Studebaker - -being built to <br />)mmodate visiting business people and <br />�smen transacting business with the <br />)any.
