South Bend Redevelopment Commission <br />Regular Meeting - March 11, 1983 <br />5. OLD BUSINESS (Cont.) <br />a. Continued... <br />Mr. ckaj agreed. <br />Mr. Rlobinson stated that we have a prevailing <br />wage scale established and everybody ought to <br />be paying the same wages. He said he still <br />questioned not only Heritage Construction, but <br />Char es Brown Maintenance who has done a lot of <br />work here. He pointed out that Brown is bidding <br />almo t $24,000 and V.V. Engle bid a little over <br />$16, 00. <br />Mr. ckaj stated that these are men like him- <br />self who work for themselves. <br />Mr. obinson stated that he knows that and it is <br />one f his personal hang -ups but that was beside <br />the Doint. He knows what the law is and he is <br />not lizing Mr. Bockaj for that. <br />Mr. $ockaj stated that he cannot afford these <br />Mr. obinson asked what Mr. Bockaj meant that <br />he can't afford it. He stated that he has to <br />pay them anyway. <br />Mr. Bockaj said he agreed but he can't afford <br />the wages because the wages are all so high for <br />the mmunt of work that he is doing. His men <br />make more money than he does. <br />Mr. Robinson said that he was not worried about <br />Mr. 3ockaj as an employer. He was worried about <br />the Nnployee who is entitled to make a decent <br />livi g for his family and that is what it is all <br />abou and why there is a wage scale. <br />Mr. ckaj agreed and stated that the employee <br />makep a good decent living. <br />Mr. Tobinson said that he isn't too good and no <br />way s it too good. <br />Mr. 13ockaj stated he had a guy and paid him $9.90 <br />an hour and he wasn't qualified. It took him six <br />hours to paint a closet when it could take Mr. <br />Bockaj one hour. <br />Mr. obinson said that Mr. Bockaj should get rid <br />of an employee if he is not qualified to do the <br />work <br />-5- <br />
