South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Me ting August 7, 1981
5. OLD BU INESS (continued)
a. co tinued...
Re erring to the Monroe- Sample Development Area, Mr.
Corley said that of 131 houses located in the resi-
de tial section north of Bronson Street, nearly 38%
arE listed in the Historic Sites and Structures In-
ve tory recently published by the Historic Preserva-
ti n Commission. Ten (.TO`)of the residential struc-
tu es in the "acquisition" area south of Bronson
Street are listed in the inventory. These historic
houses have architectural value. In addition, there
arE about 6 houses south of Bronson Street that are
soundly constructed and well contained, though per-
ha s architecturally less distinctive. Part of our
joint effort with Southold is to identify those houses
south of Bronson Street that could, and perhaps should
be moved to appropriate sites north of Bronson Street.
We have a design team working now on this phase, pre-
paring a site plan of the area and the residential
section, showing existing structures, width, depth,
height, elevations and landscaping, to have a more
pr cise tool to use when making recommendations con -
ce ning houses that need to be moved. The Design
Team members are: Professor Norman Crowe, an associate
professor of architecture at the University of Notre
Dame, Professor Jaime Bellalta, a landscape architect
at Notre Dame, and two architectural interns. Sketches
will be prepared to give the residents a visual idea
of 'hat the area could look like. A brochure will
th n.be published to encourage people to stay in the
ar a.
Ms. Dea Andrews, Administrative Assistant at Southold
Heritage Foundation, explained that the function of
their organization is offering services to people who
want to get involved in house rehabilitation. Ms.
Andrews stated that no agency can take over and do a
job for the poeple, it is important for people living
in an area to get excited and carry out projects on
their own. They will work with residents in rehabing
a house and, if it is possible, encourage renters to
bec me buyers.
Per. Nimtz placed Vice President Robinson in the Chair,
as Ir. Nimtz is a member of the Southold Heritage
Fou dation and can not vote on this contract.
7
