South Bend lRedevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - March 20, 1981
5. PUBLIC IHEARING (continued)
Mr. McMahon explained that this was quite to the con-
trary. The parcels that we are enabled to take
action on today are a result of the initial acquisition
phase. In another set of hearings, a whole second set
of acquisition parcels, will be listed. If we choose to
acquire Mr. West's business, if there was rationale,
it would take place with the second acquisition phase.
The timetable for bringing the second phase before the
Commission is early April. Should the Commission choose
to do something at Max's, that could happen with all of
those parcels in April. Nothing you are passing today
could prevent that from happening. It would strictly
be up to the Commission.
Mr. Mc night said he understood what was being said very
clearl but his concern was with the action the Commis -
sion was passing today in reference to the parcels of
land tat have already been identified. If the Commis-
sion proceeds in the taking of houses and demolition of
property, at that point we are suffering. I am a little
bit unready to have the Commission wait until April and
the second round of hearings for property acquisition.
We all know the Commission has taken ten years to get
to thi point, and it can be another ten years before the
area o tlined in green is actually acted upon. I was
going to state my willingness to have the Commission
consid r our property at a later date, but I don't want
to wail until you have to deal with another two hundred
structures in order for us to be satisfied. We will be
wiped cut with the area you are taking in the first
phase.
Mr. Mc ahon explained that the seventy structures are
includ d in both phases.
Mr. West stated that those structures comprised 75% of
his business right there. He went on further to say
that everybody in the neighborhood shops at Max's
Grocery. Not only do they shop, but anybody that comes
to visa them also shops at Max's Grocery. Max's Gro-
cery ij the only place to go to get bread, eggs, etc.
Mr. Ci►a asked how many residents were in that group.
Mr.
Mr. Mc
bul k o
today
t replied that there were seventy some.
hon explained that the green area is where the
the houses are located and based on the action
can't take those seventy houses.
23
