South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Me ting - March 20, 1981
5. PUBLICIHEARING (continued)
Mr. Gibney continued by saying that Southold is currently
working with the City Administration, talking to them
about designs and revolving loan programs. We hope that
in the future we can have a direct involvement with the
commun ty in that area, an involvement that would repre-
sent t e people that are living there and new people that
would ttempt to come there.
Mr. Ni tz asked Mr. Gibney to mention his discussion with
the Hi toric Preservation Commission concerning house
moves.
Mr. Gi ney said that it is still a little sketchy at this
time. Southold moves homes and has found that those
houses that some people call substandard, and possibly
are, a e salvageable with some .effort and a fair amount
of exp rtise. These houses can be saved and can actually
be new landmarks in neighborhoods. Southold would like
to see more homes moved that what Redevelopment has
planneJ on by people who may be attracted to the area.
The pr ject is not as difficult as it looks. It takes a
lot of man hours, but it can be done and usually the
houses arrive in the same condition they were in before
the mo e.
Mr. Mc ahon said that we feel that because of the scope
of the program proposed in Monroe- Sample, that we would
like very much to outline a program where we can estab-
lish s mething along the line and the character of what
you just heard, right in the neighborhood, to implement
city programs and to provide assistance in interpreting
and going through the relocation process. We would hope
that we could do that within the next month, and certainly
very key in that regard, we would ask that the neighbor-
hood, either through Mrs. Hernandez or other representa-
tives, participate in that process. We are setting up
something that we hope to be tailor -made specifically
for the Monroe- Sample area, and we feel that the in-
volveiTent of the neighborhood group is essential in that
their involvement to make certain that we are addressing
their particular concerns and have in place over there
on a ull -time basis the type of vehicle that they need
in or er to make this happen as smoothly as possible.
Mr. Nigel Hawman introduced himself as a resident in the
area that is staying and said that something of particular
concern to him, as long as we are redesigning the area, is
that there is an awful lot of through- traffic on South
15
