South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Me ting - March 20, 1981
5. PUBLICIHEARING (continued)
Street There is truck traffic (semis) that to up
Carrol Street, coming off of Bronson. Mr. Hawman
said he doesn't know how that kind of traffic can be
stopped, but it is a problem and wondered if anyone
had anv solution to it.
Mr. Niritz said that we understood the problem and knew
that it is difficult to solve.
Mr. McMahon explained that through- traffic is a problem
throughout the city, irrespective to what the neigh-
borhood is, and does present problems. Mr. McMahon said
that there are a number of things that we can do that
help. We are going to be doing some light industrial
activity in the area south of Bronson and we have a big
advantage over a number of other areas that are zoned that
way in the city in that just like the industrial park com-
plex near the airport, we will have control over how those
parcelt are disposed of and the types of firms that come
in.
Because of Redevelopment's involvement up front with re-
spect to that activity, it is usually pretty easy to
establish some good working relationships with the firms
that are in there or the firms near by,such as further
on Bronson Street, that would benefit from it. We would
establish traffic patterns that their dispatchers would
utilize in order to get shipping in and out of the neigh-
borhood. The traffic light at Bronson Street provides
an opportunity to see to i.t that most of that traffic
doesn't come further up.Lincolnway and doesn't disperse
throug the neighborhood, they can get out through Bron-
son.
Second'
asked
viaduc-
if it
good do
If the!
in the
Mr. Mcf
truck c
it is o
is at,
We can
y, the Department of Public Works is going to be
;o lower the pavement underneath the Fellows Street
At present it is about 13 or 13 -1/2 feet, and
s dropped to about 14 feet can also facilitate a
!al of traffic going out south to Sample Street.
e two thinks are done and we work with businesses
area, the bulk.of the problem can be resolved.
lahon further explained that if, for example, a dairy
.ecides to go through the neighborhood just because
oming from someplace else and going someplace, this
,pe of problem that is really difficult to handle.
post the streets and ask for some enforcement.
16
