South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Me ting - March 20, 1981
5. PUBLICIHEARING (continued)
downtown. This is a neighborhood.activity that should
be handled in the neighborhood and should best be ad-
dressed along that line. For that reason our staff has
been spending some time considering how to address that
problem. One of the suggestions that has been made is
that we involve one of the local groups currently in-
volved in the restoration of an older neighborhood and
we are going to be pursuing some negotiations with them,
and are asking them if they would take on this activity
or expand their activity providing that we provide them
with the necessary support in order to establish an out-
reach program in that neighborhood. A good deal of our
conversation thus far has been with Mr. Jeff Gibney who
is with Southold Heritage Foundation. We are only in the
beginning of negotiations in that regard, and Mr. Gibney
will t ll you what more we can say beyond our intention
to est blish an office over there.
Mr. Je f Gibney said that he agreed with the statement
Glenda ae Hernandez read this morning - it is an excel-
lent statement. There are many difficult situations
going n in the Monroe- Sample area right now. Southold
Herita e Foundation is a non- profit organization managed
by a Board of Directors who are very involved in re-
vitali ation type projects in the near west side of
South Bend. That is the area from dowtown west to Meade
Street Lincoln Way West to Western. We have similar
proble s in our neighborhood as those which exist in
Monroe Sample and we also have similar assets. We see
there are a lot of development potential assets which
are still present in the Monroe - Sample area. Our Board
is ver concerned that we might have something to offer
the residents of Monroe- Sample and Redevelopment in terms
of encouraging new construction and helping relocated
people that may be moved out of the area south of Bronson
into t e area north of Bronson, if that is economically
feasible.
Curren
client
talkie
throug
Bureau
them.
that y
in the
come.
is not
ing, b
where
ly in the near west side Southold is'assisting.'
by working directly with the Bureau of Housing,
about loan programs that are available to them
the Bureau, acting as a middle man,.-contacting the
and trying to get programs that are eligible for
Mr. Gibney further said that it is very important
u have people on the streets and in offices located
neighborhood so they will know exactly where to
They would also feel better if the housing center
located on the 12th floor of the County -City Build -
t right on Columbia or Bronson Streets, or some -
n the neighborhood.
14.
