South BendlRedevelopment Commission
Regular Me ting - March 7, 1980
7. PROGRESS REPORTS (continued)
The Chair recognized Mr. John Kagel, of the
Downtmn Council. (Mr. Nimtz mentioned that
Mr. Kagel had just returned from the Governor's
Confer nce on Downtown Revitalization and that
he was on the "steering committee ").
Mr. Ka el: I would like to thank the Commission
very much for making it possible for the Redevelop
ment Ccmmission to participate in the Governor's
2nd Anrual Conference on Downtown Revitalization.
There as excellent participation by the City of
South Bend. In my estimation, the exhibit we
displayed was more interesting than the other
exhibits., I want to thank members of your
staff, Ann Kolata and Paul Falduto who went
above and beyond the call of duty leaving here
at 5 o'clock in the morning. Included in the
exhibit were the Century Mall model, the picture
of the First Bank Center, and publications
from the Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown
Council and the Convention and Visitor Bureau.
Participating in the program was Mr. Nimtz,
who was moderator of a panel for two days,
along with Mr. Lloyd Taylor who was a parti-
cipant on a panel and Mr. Chuck Leone repre-
senting the northwest neighborhood area. Also,
I served as moderator of a panel. There was just
an awful lot of interest about what is going on
here. Incidentally, there were some very impor-
tant HUD officials represented, as well as some
people from the Department of Commerce, Economic
Develop ent Administration, etc. I commend the
Commission and I think it should be a matter of
record.
Mr. Nimtz: Mr. Kagel, I want to thank the Chamber
and the Convention and Visitors Bureau for sending
a young lady to Indianapolis to stand there the
entire time and be on duty to explain the exhibits
of Souti Bend, etc. I feel it created a great
deal of interst to the people who were there,
the dev lopers, bankers, real estate developers, etc.
Mr. Kag l: I feel the Commission should do this.
This is the first time that South Bend took the
show out of town, and maybe the Commissioners
will wait to confer with Mayor Parent to consider
taking he show on the road more often. It is
terribl important public relations work.
-11-
REPORT ON GOVERNOR'S 2ND
ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON DOWN-
TOWN REVITALIZATION
