Brooks Brademas: Mr. Chairman, and members of the Commission,
my concern for the recycling of older buildings for historic preser-
vation and restoration is very well documented by the efforts we have
de in the 100 Center in Mishawaka. I think we have an opportunity
h re, and I have had a chance to talk briefly with Mr. Ellison,
. Thomas of the Housing Authority, Mrs. Baumgartner of Bureau of
Housing, and with some of the federal officials about the possibili-
ties of this project being a proto -type. It does have the added
ccmplication of a move. A move, of course, has some problems with
t e timing of it. In talking with Mr. Pat McMahon, he indicated
t at the actual steps that the City would have to take would not be
accomplished until the 29th of May, and that they would like to have
the house off that lot by the 15th of June. Within this period of
time, the foundation would have been completed on the other lot, and
the house would be picked up and moved out of the way. I am giving
you this background so that you may understand that a lot of things
lieve to fall into place if this project is to work. In terms of the
r habilitation of the building itself, to bring it up to the minimum
property standards, and to redo the kind of job that this Commission
d Southhold expects because of its location in the historic preser-
vation area, it is going to be a relatively expensive proposition.
The whole emphasis of the rehabilitation loan program is to attempt
to provide housing for low and moderate income families. In terms of
the rent schedule, we are talking about rents that would be in the
neighborhood of $285.00 - $340.00 monthly. They are not what you
call "low rents ", but they are within the framework of the Section 8
p ogram. The concept is essentially this - - -to acquire the house from
the City for $1.00 and other kinds of consideration, locating it
a iacent to the Frank -Lloyd Wright house, on the West Washington Street.
0
