7.(g) N W BUSINESS, Continued:
sme drawings today for a meeting that is being held probably right
n w with some interested developers.
C air: This involves the area that was going to be taken by the so-
called "Superblock ". It involves the "hole" and other undeveloped
land downtown. We have had as the Chair has explained at previous
m etings, informal inquiries by other people as to specific areas both
u der our control and other private control and with the Superblock
n t going because of Sears, we have to come up with some alternative
p an as to how to use this vacant land under existing HUD regulations
a d this is what this architect is doing.
Lindstaedt: Does this include development of off - street parking?
. Wiggins: The parking aspect will be a part of his work and the
rton- Aschman Associates study also. Parking is a major problem.
Chair: This is one of the big problems, as Don (Wiggins) has said
before. Downtown surface parking is expensive and yet you want to
convenience the public. You have a cost factor involved here and
this is what has to come out of the machine when you get together
the Barton- Aschman Associates, the architect, the Downtown Mayor's
C mmittee, the Commission and everyone, as to what is the best thing
t do considering need, cost, regulations, etc. plus you really don't
h ve the space.
Mr. Lindstaedt: I should think someone would think of retiring those
parking lot bonds we have instead of stringing this thing out for-
ever and a day.
Chair: The current parking garages are another ball game altogether.
Mr. Lindstaedt: My girls don't like to drive up in those things, they
can never find the car and secondly, it gets darned cold up there in
the winter time.
Chair: The other day Mr. Brownell was telling me about his trip to
C icago with Mr. Butler, and they parked in the Loop and paid $4.50
f r parking in a city garage and were there for maybe four hours.
M * Wiggins: These same people who cry real tears about paying a dime
f r a parking meter here will go to Chicago and pay $3.50 and up
a d you don't hear them squawking about it.
M. Cira: But they go there twice a year.
. Wiggins: That's a lot of dimes, nonetheless.
Motion was put to vote and carried unanimously.
h C. Wayne Brownell read Item 7(h) of the agenda which
for Commission authorization to enter into contract with
is a request
Dr. George
CONTRACT
WITH DR.
Win .as Consultant for the planning and promotion of sale
of land
GEORGE
in the Central Downtown Project Indiana R -66, services of
Consultant
WING
to begin January 1, 1977 and continue on a month -to -month
basis.
APPROVED
IND R -66
- 14 -
