6. NEWIBUSINESS (Cant'd
—r-
Southhold is trying to redevelop the Tippecanoe Place and
thE: condition of the driveway and parking.lot is quite deplor-
able, and if they were permitted to use the brick to repave
the drive, it would be entirely in -'keeping with the street
surface material of the period. It would also be using the
brick where the general public would derive benefit from it...
This would help maintain the mansion in its historical context.
They have a commitment from the City for summer workers and
they would be used in the project.
President Nimtz stated, "I also wear a hat at Southhold and
will not participate in any action here on this subject, and
now will turn the meeting over to the Vice President to Chair
this portion of the meeting."
Presiding Officer, Vice President Mr. John E. Chenney, inquired
if the paving bricks are separate from the other bricks? Mr.
Brownell said they are in a street and have never been torn
up. Commissioner Wiggins asked if any quantity of these bricks
that have been removed and have been stored elsewhere? Mr.
Brownell answered that some of the bricks have been removed
by theft and hauled away. It is in Block 6, off the old L.W.E.,
the old Columbia Street that is closed, west of the old Columbia
warehouse.
Mr. Wilcox suggested if the Commission is going to do anything
about this request for the bricks, he would suggest it be done
as quickly as possible, as he has personally talked to people
wanting to take the bricks away and they told him that we do not
own them and that they are entitled to take them. At the rate
the bricks are disappearing, they will not be available for the
future.
Mr. Brownell said that Mr. Rollin Farrand, the City Engineer,
wants the bricks for city use, wherein Mr. Slabaugh stated that
the street is not city owned; it belongs to Redevelopment; that
this Department acquired the whole area. 'Mr. Gene Evans, Execu-
tive Secretary of the Civic Planning Association, said that
Southhold would have a problem because they are acquiring owner-
ship, but do not intend to move there until the end of the summer.
In the meantime if it is made known that Southhold will get it,
others may move in and take the bricks, and "I don't know how
you can protect the bricks from being taken." Mr. Nimtz said
Southhold would pick up the bricks within two weeks.
Mr. Kevin J. Butler, Commission Legal Counsel, said that "we own
the property. The street has not been vacated, so the City still
has the right to the bricks We are in the process of filing a
petition for the right of the street; then we would own the bricks."
Commissioner Wiggins made the recommendation that Mrs. Price make
the request to the'Board of Works direct, and Mrs. Janet S. Allen
requested, "You make the suggestion; don't wait for Ruth to do it."
- 19 -
