The
entries will be narrowed down to five (5) tonight, with the
public to select the winning entry by next Wednesday. The Visual
Impr vement Committee is headed by Dr. Fern and Dr. Davidson.
Rather than limit the judging to the VIP's, with seven people
representing the business community, Mr. Lou Wilcox asked that
some ne from the Redevelopment Commission be on the art panel
also and the architectural committee for a fair representation.
President Helmen appointed Mr. Don Wiggins as an artist to re-
pres nt the Commission. As Mr. Wiggins had a prior commitment,
Mr. ennon volunteered to act on his behalf and the Commissioners
were in favor of Mr. Lennon to be one of the judges.
River Bend Plaza Activities: Mr. Lou Wilcox, Director
of t ,4)
e River Bend Plaza, presented the schedule of events for
the laza.
It w s decided that 2:00 p.m., would be an agreeable time for
the tart of the River Bend Plaza activities, on Sunday, June
30, 974.
Mr. Wilcox responded to comments concerning his remarks at the
Y.W. .A. luncheon presentation. Mr. Wilcox said in regard
to the statement made by Conrad Damian, and printed in The
South Bend Tribune, (article by.Jeanne Derbeck), that he wanted
to go on public record that he was not misquoted. However, the
spools of thread, off white, was actually bias tape. He stated
that substantially the newspaper was kind in its presentation—
his ersonal opinion.
President Helmen said that thread and bias tape can be purchased
downtown. Mr. Wade also.concurred.
Mr. Wilcox said he didn't feel he should say anything in a group
meet ng presentation to the remark as presented. He said he
fran ly felt the article was reported substantially and other
rema ks could have been reported and were not.
Mr. Wilcox reported to President Helmen's question that there
is no problem of usage for the River Bend Plaza since the River
Bend Gazette appeared in The South Bend Tribune. Since the
Gazette was published and is also being distributed at the
Rivet Bend Plaza Office, Mr. Wilcox said his office has received
an a azing number of telephone calls and volunteers, various
kind of service on the Plaza, singers, dancers, musicians,
and has had approximately 200 to 300 telephone calls.
