6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont'd)
Insteac of having two fluorescent tubes, the signs would be
illuminated by a single lamp. The interior illuminated sign
box wo ld be fabricated locally by North American Signs. The
panel face will appear as one continuous piece of metal to be
punctuated with tenant names and backed 'up with white Plexi-
glass vith faceted letters. The canopies will be wired so .
that additional individual signs can be installed under the
canopy perpendicular to the business store fronts.
Servicing this design should be cheaper as the premium ballast
is better than the one specified, there are fewer electrical
components, and with a local firm involved in fabrication and
erection of these signs a lower maintenance bid for this equip-
ment would be submitted than for the one specified, decreasing
our cost.
Mr. Lennon said it is the recommendation of the staff that we
explorE the possibilities of an equal product and request per-
missior of the Redevelopment Commission that if an equal product
is certified by Environmental Planning and Design and Clyde E.
Williams & Associates, Inc., our Joint Venture Consultants,
that WE do approve the substitute product and notify North
Americ n Signs to proceed with a prototype model and that the
Executive Director be authorized to negotiate with the parties
involy d subject to Legal Counsel review.
Concerning the tentative date of May 31, 1974 as the opening
date for the River Bend Plaza, we have requested a joint meet-
ing with the contractor and the consultant to review the con-
struction schedule and to report back at the February 15 or
March 1, 1974, Commission meeting as to the feasibility of the
grand pening being held on May 31st. If it appears unlikely
that the earlier date is possible, we will tentatively set June
21, 22 or 23 date as possibilities.
Commissioner Wiggins also pointed out it is important to use a
local outfit.
It would be up to the individual owners and tenants if they
would ant to go with a better type of illumination. It would
be dono at the tenants' expense.
The reason for the requested change is the original firm is very
slow to respond to our needs, the shop drawings are not approved
nor do they even have it. The Hickey Company is making the re-
commendation and our consultants approve the recommendation.
On mot!
mously
and the
parties
n by Mr. Wiggins, seconded by Rev. Williams and unani-
arried, the above substitution as discussed was approved
Executive Director be authorized to negotiate with the
involved, subject to Legal Counsel review.
- 7 -
