6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont'd)
The actual estimate will have to be verified. Our Ed Bauer
met earlier in the week.with the artists and asked them to
verify that the original estimate exceeded that figure. On
that basis it could be disqualified. The judges felt it
could be an outstanding piece and a theme piece for the
River Bend - Plaza. The sculptor is getting other estimates
to see if it could be built for that. He had specified
$15,000 but it is not verified. We are asking the sculptor
get some logical price figures for the work.and if .a reasonable
facsimile could be built for that. If not, #4 piece, Violin
Woman could be constructed instead. Mr. Landland, the sculptor
of this piece, indicated that the piece could be completed
within the $7,000 range. Also, the site in front of the Morris
Civic Puditorium, the future plaza park, would be more appro-
priate for this particular sculpture, and among others, we will
also have the Bill Rasmussen Memorial Fund, which is being
handleq by the Downtown Council who have been in contact with
Presid nt Helmen.
President Helmen advised the Downtown Council now has $3,000
in the Bill Rasmussen Memorial Fund and he thought it would
be appropriate to have a separate piece with a plaque. That
would rlease Mrs. Rasmussen and the boys.
Mr. Le non advised that we are applying to the National Endow-
ment for Arts and Humanities for a match fund in whatever
amount we have in donations they will match. This application
has been filed.
On motion by Mr. Wiggins, seconded by Rev. Williams and unani-
mously carried, the sculptural award is to be held in abeyance
until 1he next Commission meeting, which is scheduled for Feb-
ruary 15, 1974.
b. Canopy Sign Construction: Commission authorization
was re uested for North American Sign Company (South Bend
Neon) ecommendation of the canopy sign construction proposed
for th River Bend Plaza.
Dan Akin, with Clyde E. Williams & Associates, who serves as
our Pr ject Engineer for the River Bend Plaza, presented the
functi ns and aesthetics of this proposal. The letter from
Dan Akin covering this subject was in the Commission's packet,
dated anuary 25, 1974.
As our engineering consultants, they are authorized to make
recomm ndations for substitutions provided the product is equal
or com arable in quality for a product to be recommended for
substi ution.
The sign enclosure itself would be made from 0.090 gauge sheet metal
rather than from 0.125 gauge extruded aluminum. The fabrication
procedtire would be less costly than the extrusion process speci-
fied, and would provide the same rigidly as the 0.125 gauge extru-
sion. It would also yield a more uniform finished color than that
specif ed.
- 6 -
