D wntown Mall Design: Mr. Bellinger ap- MALL DESIGN,
prised Ttat consideration should be given, in the CENTRAL DOWNTOWN
near future, to select an architect to design the URBAN RENEWAL
Downtown Mall. Mr. John K. Wilson, Executive Direc- PROGRAM, R -66
tor, Area Plan Commission, is currently compiling a
County Urban Design Report. This Report suggests a
specific design review committee, which we should
evaluate in terms of its application to the Downtown
Program. Our current thinking is that the architect
selected must have proven experience in mall design.
A local architect can certainly be considered pro-
vided he is associated with a nationally known archi-
tectural firm or someone with proven experience in
mall design.
President Wiggins suggested in order for us to
evaluate any degree of competence, we should talk
to architects and hear of proposals. A local man
will have to live with his work, while large firms
with nati nal names have representatives acting in
their beh lf. This is something to be considered.
"What we peed is fresh, but well thought out ideas
that can tand the test of a little logic."
-7-
