MICHELS CORPORATION - STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS
6.3.2 Michels Environmental Resource Group
In response to the increasingly complex and constantly shifting regulatory environment, Michels
created the Michels Environmental Resource Group (MERG) in 2006 to provide specialized
internal environmental support for all of our employees and projects. MERG was subsequently
rolled into our Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Department as a subgroup. MERG
reviews all environmental requirements of a project including: regulatory compliance, client
expectations and Michels core expectations.
MERG is managed by Dave Melum (dmelum michels.0 ), who oversees a staff of full-time
compliance specialists and engineering technicians who provide our operating divisions with a
variety of services, including:
• Best Management Practices (BMP's)
• Bid Guidance
• Interface with Regulatory Authorities
• Permit Acquisition and Management
• Prepare Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP's) and Checklists
• Site Compliance Audits
• Training (Including Erosion and Sediment Control and Spill Prevention)
6.3.3 Environmental Management Program and Training
Michels believes everything starts with training, as effective training is vital in communicating
our environmental expectations. We understand that satisfying our environmental goals is an
operational issue. To achieve those goals, in both compliance and stewardship, it takes every
employee's understanding and commitment. Michels provides annual training and job -specific
training to support our team. We understand our employees can't keep up with the continually
changing environmental requirements, but they are expected to know knowledgeable support is
only a phone call away.
Some of the tools Michels has developed to communicate our expectations include: "Michels
101", which is an orientation program in which new employees are integrated into our culture;
"Michels Environmental Handbook"; "Michels Core Environmental Expectations"; "Michels
Digital Toolboxes"; guidance documents; and annual training.
6.3.4 Field Tools
In addition to on -site field support from MERG compliance specialists and engineering
technicians, Michels' field leadership is provided with a variety of documents and resources to
guide compliance, including:
33
