South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting—June 14, 2012
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
B. Airport Economic Development Area
(6) continued...
Mr. Varner asked if there were any
contributing partners or is it strictly to be
funded by the city. Mr. Schalliol noted that
Union Station Technology Center will pay
for the portions that relate to their needs.
Some other funds are coming from the Board
of Public Works.
Mr. Inks asked if the responsibilities for
funding would be spelled out in the
Memorandum of Understanding. Mr.
Schalliol responded that they would.
Mr. Varner asked if the study is mainly
trying to recognize the assets being brought
to the table for both projects and how the
visions for both can be complimentary. Mr.
Schalliol responded yes. The first phase will
not only determine our assets but also figure
out what additional assets could be provided.
Mr. Varner asked when the study would be
completed. Mr. Schalliol said it is expected
by the end of June.
Mr. Davis wondered whether with all the
energy production at this location, might it
negatively affect quality of life? Mr.
Schalliol replied that there is a Renaissance
District partner that is interested in bringing
to the City of South Bend a bio-processing
plant. They take solid waste and turn it into
energy. One of the questions we face is
where to put those kinds of users. A look at
the whole picture will enable us to make wise
decisions.
12
