South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting—December 13, 2011
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
C. Airport Economic Development Area
(2) continued...
at the sustainability efforts that Public Works
has been working on and how it could fold
those into the marketability of the park. BSA
came up with the urban forest concept,
envisioning a parallel with the way a forest
recycles and sustains itself. They want to
incorporate the sustainable technologies
coming out of Public Works, Notre Dame
and the State of Indiana, to not only sustain
the park, but to attract companies through the
resulting lower lease rates or lower utility
rates the park could provide with those
ecosystems.
Mr. Dan Miles stressed again that the goals
of the park are innovative infrastructure,
integrated sustainable components, and low
lease rate. The core center feature of the
park is the Accelerator Building and also the
Renewable Energy Center, which was in the
Master Plan as a sustainable component.
Mr. Lake added that the goal was to create
the circle center feature that all of the spines
culminate into. It is also the hub for the
sustainable functions of the park. They have
proposed a renewable energy center and a
catch-basin for storm water run-off in order
to not further tax the city's storm water
system. They would capture that storm water
and redistribute it for irrigation or make-up
water for grey water systems which reduces
the need for municipal water, as well.
Then, to make this a marketable feature, they
proposed the center icon which will be the
60
