South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting—December 13, 2011
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
B. South Bend Central Development Area
(1) continued...
Stadium Use Management and Operation
Agreement has already been approved and
executed by the South Bend Park Board and
himself. The document also requires
Commission approval, in part because the
new owners are asking for additional
improvements to the stadium. The recent
improvements to the stadium are spectacular,
have made a tremendous difference for the
viewing fans and allow us to use the stadium
more frequently for other types of events.
The Agreement outlines what those
improvements will be. These improvements conform to
the master plan for downtown.
Mr. Kernan noted that six years ago he put
together a group of local investors for the
purpose of keeping the Silver Hawks in
South Bend. They have accomplished that
mission. The team has not been financially
sustainable, so Mr. Kernan began looking for
new investors. Mr. Berlin was introduced to
him by a mutual friend. After some
discussion, Mr. Berlin became interested in
purchasing the team outright. Following
approval of this Agreement by the
Commission, Mr. Berlin and his company
will be applying formally to baseball league
for its approval, a three step process:
6
