Mr. <br /> Kernan believes Mr. Berlin is the right <br /> person at the right time to take over the <br /> reigns of the Silverhawks. Mr. Berlin is a <br /> baseball fan, a partner in the Chicago White <br /> Sox, has had an interest in minor league <br /> baseball and can do many things Mr. <br /> Kernan's investors have been unable to do, <br /> as far as providing resources for advertising, <br /> marketing, and promotion. The improve- <br /> ments the Commission has already made <br /> have made a huge difference. The <br /> improvements being recommended will do <br /> complete the project and make Coveleski a <br /> family friendly atmosphere with family- <br /> centered activities. Our goal is the same as it <br /> was six years ago —to keep the ball club <br /> here. This agreement, with Commission <br /> consent, will keep the South Bend Silver <br /> Hawks up and running for the next 20 years, <br /> and is an extraordinary commitment on the <br /> part of Mr. Berlin. <br /> Mr. Berlin said that for him the issue was <br /> straight-forward. The economic <br /> development of South Bend hinges on having <br /> the right kind of attractions downtown that <br /> draw people to the location. He believes <br /> with an upgraded stadium and the kind of <br /> marketing promotions just spoken about, the <br /> ball park will become an outstanding <br /> cornerstone of the plan to bring people <br /> downtown.
