South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting -February 3, 2006
4. COMMUNICATIONS
() continued...
once ~~e are assured we will stay in this building.
This program will bring artists from across the
nation and from other nations into South Bend.
Moving to another building
If Fire Arts is asked to move to another building,
there is good chance that the organization will
die. Many artists are mentally exhausted from
fixing up the current building, and they don't
want to do it again. Only recently have our
artists returned to their former productivity level.
If we stay put, the positive momentum will
continue to grow, but if we are asked to leave this
building and this location, some will drop out
immediately, diminishing our very capable
workforce and putting a strain on the remaining
few. If those who leave take with them critical
tools and equipment that they have loaned to the
group, Fire Arts could crumble like a sand castle
at high tide.
FIRE ARTS' PLEA TO THE URBAN
DEVELOPMENT COM1l~11SSI0N
We ask the Commission to keep Fire Arts, Inc.
exactly where it is so we can take advantage of
the momentum that has built up and continue to
thrive. We also ask that they find a way to make
this building our permanent home. Only with the
security of place can we make plans well into the
future, plans that can enhance the organization,
bring artists from across the nation into South
Bend, and continue to change the urban
landscape with our sculptures and charge up the
neighborhood.
13
